Fisherman's Work 1940. No. 8 .:
Fishing by means of trawl seemed promising .... Trawling ... is performed by attaching a rope to the boat and towing the net after the boat so that it trails. Thus, the frequent casting and towing of the net back into the boat is needless. Trawling is the most mechanized type of fishing ... If a storm breaks out, however, the fishing nets and hooks are often to be abandoned and left in the sea, they are wasted. The largest trawling boats do not interrupt work when the wind reaches..., Another advantage: the freshly caught fish is much tastier and its storage is considerably longer ....
Bigger ships and boats were required for trawling as well as trained staff and of course trawls themselves, which could no longer use linen or cotton netting. For this type of fishing only nylon thread was needed ....
Latvian fishermen began preparations for the fishing in the ocean in 1953. HThe most suitable nets for this purpose were recognized driftnets. Middle-size trawler VZT-332 was recognized as the most suitable vessel. At the beginning of the 1960’s trawls were adapted for the needs of fishing herring as new cheaper ways of fishing were searched for.
